A real city, not a resort
Patras sits on the north-west corner of the Peloponnese, facing the Gulf of Patras and the mountains of the mainland across the water. It is a working city: the University of Patras, two large public hospitals, a busy ferry port, and the shops, courts and offices of the regional capital of Western Greece. Its Carnival, first held in 1829, fills the streets from January to the weeks before Lent.
For a family that wants a Greek base used through the year, that matters more than beaches: schools, doctors, pharmacies and public services are open in January as in July.

Schools and universities
Children who live in Patras can attend Greek public schools, which teach in Greek, and the city has private schools too. We have not confirmed an international or IB school in Patras: if your children need daily schooling in English, check the options yourself before you decide, because for some families this is the reason to choose Athens.
The University of Patras, founded in 1964, describes itself as the third-largest in Greece, with about 28,400 active undergraduates (2025). Most teaching is in Greek, with a few programmes in other languages, and it runs a Greek Language and Culture Lab for newcomers. The Hellenic Open University, which teaches mainly at a distance, has its headquarters in the city.
Healthcare
Patras has two large public hospitals: St Andrew General Hospital in the south of the city, about 1.5 km from Mavromataion Street, and the University General Hospital at Rio, with about 700 beds, next to the main campus. Karamandaneio, a children’s hospital, is about 3.4 km away by road. Every Golden Visa applicant needs private health insurance with the minimum cover the law sets, whatever care they plan to use.

Daily life, and the honest picture
Patras has the rhythm of a university city: cafés around the centre, markets, a long waterfront, and a student population that keeps the city young. Its size keeps errands short. Greek is the language of daily administration, so plan on a Greek-speaking lawyer or accountant for official matters.
It is not a booming economy. Unemployment in Western Greece was 12.4% in the second quarter of 2026, against 7.9% for Greece as a whole, and households in the region spend less than in Attica. For a family whose income comes from elsewhere, that mostly shows up as lower prices; for anyone hoping to work locally, it matters.
The neighbourhood of MVR 19
